Keeping your skin healthy will make it look and feel great. In order to get that 'glow' of health, you need to take good care of your skin. The way to do that is to step up a daily skin-care regimen (yes, daily). Why? Makeup, dirt, oil, bacteria, dust and other unsanitary things can wreak havoc on your epidermis. Setting up a regular skin care routine will help keep your skin clean, fresh and youthful-looking.
Now, how do you set up a skin care regimen? What steps are involved?
Many experts agree that five important skincare steps will keep you looking your best today, tomorrow and for years to come.
The first step is using a gentle cleanser twice daily to remove unwanted dirt and bacteria from the skin’s surface. You should choose a cleanser that fits your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, use an oil-free cleanser. Dry skin types should seek out a cleanser that contains the right level of moisture.
No matter your skin type, soap should be avoided at all costs. It strips the facial skin of natural moisturizers. Using your hands to wash your face is best. Otherwise, you could be working additional dirt and toxins into your skin instead of getting rid of them. Additionally, washing your face five to six times a day will not help in the fight against acne. You may end up stripping the skin of its natural moisture. As a result, the skin could produce more oil to compensate, leading to increased trouble spots.
The second step is applying skin toner. Toners have an evaporating and cooling action that contracts the facial muscles and pores, temporarily reducing their size. Toners also remove any excess dirt that cleansing may have missed. Again, toners should also reflect the natural skin type. Fresheners are the mildest and may contain small amounts of citric acid from ingredients like lemon juice. Clarifying lotions are a bit stronger, and astringents are the strongest toners. (Note: Teenagers who experience high levels of oil are most likely to use astringents.)
Adults are cautioned not to use the stronger toning products for fear of over-drying the skin which can lead to lines and wrinkles.
